Dear Sir,
You would be aware that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the culmination of what Ann Clwyd MP described in parliament as 'The genocide Anfal campaign against Iraqi Kurds in 1987-88' and also of the Halabja chemical attack. You would also be aware also that the Iraqi Supreme Court has recognised the Anfal as a crime of Genocide in 2007. We believe that the International Community has a duty to assist Genocide Victims as soon as possible. Let us not forget what can happen if we leave these patter unaddressed. The next generation may question whether these crimes ever happened at all, and the perpetrators may construct their revised version of history, as has happened with the Armenians and the Assyrians.
I write to ask you to sign the new EDM by Bob Spink on the Anfal Genocide of the Kurds (number 1805) it is very important to the Kurdish nation that it is recognised as such by the International Community. We would also be pleased if you signed his other related EDMs (number 1806 and 1807) before the summer recess.
I believe that the government is supportive of this aim. The Minister for the Middle East the Rt Hon Kim Howells attended a meeting to commemorate the Anfal and the Halabja Chemical attack recently. Your signing of this (or these) EDMS would give every encouragement to the government to take the final step of Recognition. This will go a long way to heal the grief and resentment felt by the victims that the events which occurred twenty years ago with arms sold to the Saddam Hussein regime by Western countries. I also enclose a speech by the Kurdish Regional Government Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani which elaborates on the need for, and implications of, International Recognition
